Back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of year for occupational therapists working in schools. With changing schedules, new caseloads, and lots of transitions, it’s important to have quick, effective activities ready to go—especially when you’re traveling from school to school like I do.
After almost 30 years in school-based occupational therapy, I’ve learned to keep my therapy cart packed with no-prep activities that work for a wide range of students, including those with autism and other diverse learning needs. These ideas are great for building rapport, screening skills, and supporting fine motor, visual motor, social-emotional, and executive function goals—all while having fun.
Here are 30 of my favorite easy, no-prep therapy activities and games to help start your school year strong:
Quick Grab-and-Go Activities
- Puzzles – Floor puzzles, chunky puzzles, or 24-piece jigsaw puzzles for visual motor and problem-solving skills.
- Sticker Books – Great for finger isolation and pincer grasp.
- Sticker Scenes – Kids create scenes by peeling and placing themed stickers.
- Diamond Art Stickers – Fine motor fun with built-in visual focus.
- Following Directions Worksheets – Ideal for listening and visual scanning skills.
- Roll and Write Activities – Great for handwriting warm-ups or sentence building.
- Scissor Skills Pages – Grab and cut! Add a glue stick for a quick fine motor boost.
- Play-Dough Smash Mats – No time to prep? Laminate a few and keep a small dough container in your cart. Or just make letters and shapes with the Play-Dough.
- Mini Whiteboards with Simple Copy Tasks – Practice visual memory and fine motor control.
- Spot the Difference – Great for visual scanning, focus, and attention to detail.
- Mazes – Strengthen pencil control, planning, and visual motor skills. Use with magnets for added fun and skill.
- Tracing Worksheets – Shapes, letters, or lines to warm up hands and eyes.
- Water Painting Board – Use a paint brush and water. Or just use construction paper.
- Tissue Paper Crumple Art – No scissors needed—just tearing and gluing on to make collages.
- Finger Mazes or Finger Paths – Laminate and let students trace with fingers for calming input. Even more fun use magnets on either side.
- Post-it Note Alphabet Hunt – Stick letters around the room and have students find and trace them.
- Write the Room: Hang pictures around the room to combine handwriting and movement.
- Bubble Wrap Popping Game – Target finger strength and sensory input with a twist (pop a certain number or color). Use a sharpie and write letters and have them say the letter as they pop.
- Pom-Pom or Bead Sorting with Fingers or Tweezers – Use muffin tins or an egg carton for color sorting.
- Bean Bag Toss to Letters or Numbers – Spread cards on the floor and toss to hit the right target.

Favorite No-Prep Games from My Therapy Cart
- Blink – Fast-paced matching that targets visual processing and attention.
- Cobra Paw – Great for visual scanning and quick reactions.
- Kluster/Magnet chess – Magnetic stone game that works on precision and motor control.
- Pass the Pigs – Builds turn-taking and hand coordination.
- Pop the Pig – Simple and silly way to work on hand strength and counting.
- Feed the Woozle – Encourages gross motor, coordination, and imagination.
- Letter Treasure Hunt (Therapro) – Hide letter cards around the room and search for them.
- Clack – Magnetic stacking game that targets matching, visual attention, and motor planning.
- Tenzi – Roll the dice, match patterns, and practice visual discrimination.
- Spot It – Always a hit for visual processing and quick thinking. I have multiple versions.
- Roll a Story – Make writing fun with dice. I made cards to match the pictures for differentiation

These activities don’t require much setup, and most are easy to toss in your therapy bag or cart. They work well for small groups or one-on-one sessions and are especially helpful when you’re covering multiple buildings and need something ready to go.
Whether you’re working with preschoolers or older elementary students, having these no-prep tools makes a big difference in those first few weeks of school. They help build routines, trust, and engagement without adding more to your plate.
