groundhog day occupational therapy activities

Find practical ideas for a Groundhog Day theme designed for occupational therapy and elementary school teachers. If you need activities and printables to support your weekly themes, you’re in the right place. As an occupational therapy assistant, I focus on meeting the diverse needs of my students and have put together activities that align with occupational therapy goals.

The resources I use target a variety of skills, including sensory, social-emotional, visual perception, fine motor, and gross motor development. These materials are organized for easy use, with master PDFs and theme-related items stored in 2-gallon zip-lock bags and sorted by month, season, or holiday in plastic totes. This system keeps everything accessible and ready to use year after year.

The versatility of many occupational therapy activities makes them seamlessly adaptable for preschool or kindergarten classroom themes. Explore our Free Resource Library for complimentary labels to organize your own bins and enhance efficiency.

Writing: I use a variety of different activities to meet the handwriting goals of my students. Roll a story, scrambled sentences, and write as many words as you can from Groundhog Day are a few of this year’s writing activities.  I write letters on individual cards for students to manipulate into order. You can use the wordmaker website to get a list of words. Check out the freebie in my Free Resource Library.

Visual Perception: I use my Scan It Visual Perception, Seasons Match & Sort and Shadow Matching worksheets. Check out the free Scan it Groundhog Day theme in my Free Resource Library.

Game: Matching shadows to animal’s memory game. I printed and laminated the cards from my Animal Shadow Matching resource.

Gross Motor Variation: Sometimes I add a motor component by hanging one set of the pictures around the room.  Students draw a card and then have to walk around to find the matching shadow.

Fine Motor/Crafts: To work on executive function, scissor skills and direction following, here are a few of my favorite crafts and fine motor ideas for Groundhog Day.
