Halloween Listening Skills and Following Directions Coloring Pages

October is one of my favorite times of the year to bring a little extra excitement into therapy sessions and the classroom. Seasonal activities naturally increase motivation, and Halloween-themed following directions worksheets are an easy way to build important academic and therapy skills while students think they’re simply coloring a fun picture.

These Halloween Following Directions activities combine reading, listening, writing, and fine motor practice into one meaningful lesson.

Whether you’re an occupational therapy practitioner, speech-language pathologist, special education teacher, classroom teacher, or homeschool parent, these no-prep worksheets make it easy to work on multiple goals at the same time.

Three Ways to Differentiate

One of my favorite features of this resource is that every activity can be used in three different ways.

1. Teacher-Led Listening Activities

Read the directions aloud while students carefully listen and complete the picture.

This format is perfect for working on:

  • Listening comprehension
  • Auditory memory
  • Attention to task
  • Following one-step directions
  • Following multistep directions
  • Processing verbal information

It’s also an easy way to differentiate instruction by simplifying or expanding directions depending on your students’ needs.

2. Independent Reading Practice

Students read each direction independently before completing the picture.

This version helps develop:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Sentence reading
  • Vocabulary
  • Visual discrimination
  • Independence
  • Self-monitoring

Because students receive immediate visual feedback, they stay engaged from beginning to end.

3. Writing Their Own Directions

Students become the teacher by writing directions for someone else to follow.

This encourages:

  • Written language
  • Sequencing
  • Directional concepts
  • Descriptive language
  • Executive functioning
  • Perspective taking

Students love trading papers with classmates or family members to see if their directions are clear.

More Than Just a Coloring Page

Although students are coloring, they’re also practicing many foundational skills at the same time.

These worksheets support:

  • Listening comprehension
  • Reading comprehension
  • Following directions
  • Fine motor development
  • Handwriting
  • Pencil control
  • Visual perception
  • Visual scanning
  • Attention
  • Executive functioning
  • Coloring within boundaries

Perfect for October

Use these activities for:

  • Morning work
  • Literacy centers
  • Occupational therapy sessions
  • Speech therapy
  • Small groups
  • Early finishers
  • Substitute plans
  • Homework
  • Halloween classroom parties
  • Independent work
  • Fast finisher tubs

Great for ELL and ESL Students

These activities have also become one of my favorite resources for English language learners.

Students practice:

  • Listening to simple sentences
  • Reading basic directions
  • Building vocabulary
  • Oral language
  • Sentence structure
  • Color words
  • Positional concepts

Teachers have shared that these worksheets are especially helpful when preparing students for listening and language assessments such as WIDA, while providing a fun alternative to traditional practice.

Why Teachers Love Them

These no-prep activities are easy to print and use immediately.

Instead of preparing multiple lessons for students with different ability levels, you can use the same worksheet for listening practice, reading practice, or writing practice simply by changing how the activity is presented.

That flexibility makes these Halloween Following Directions worksheets perfect for classrooms, therapy sessions, and homeschool learning throughout October.

Homework Calendars That Build Readiness Skills and Bring Families Together

Homework has changed over the years.

Many schools have moved away from traditional worksheets, and for good reason. Families are busy, students spend long days at school, and many educators are looking for meaningful ways to reinforce learning without adding unnecessary stress.

One approach that can work is using homework calendars.

Instead of sending home another worksheet, a homework calendar encourages children to practice important skills through simple, everyday activities. Better yet, it gives families opportunities to spend time together while supporting their child’s development
